This project deals with the theoretical and historical research of the performitivity of knowledge.
In a first step the project sounded out performative aspects of the development of new forms to produce knowledge. These results give the presupposition for further operation in content and method, but also the impulse for an important new accentuation. Henceforth the rootedness of experimental art of the Avant-garde shall be picked out as a central theme, concerning this art as an original way in creating of questions, experience and knowledge.
The extensive network of performative cultures of knowledge in history is dispelled from science, art, politics and everyday life by culture building barriers of view. We assume that 20 th century avant-garde art can be seen as a large-scale experimental arrangement, which is oriented to a radical questioning of those barriers of view. Having overcome the barriers the blurred traces of performative practices of artistic and scientific experiments of the 17 th century shine through. Beside science experimental art appears as an original form of performative knowledge and as a way of producing virulent questions which are directed to the origins of the modern age and furthermore to the emergence of modern science and art.
While our recent research was concentrated on scenes, instruments and methods of scientific and artistic experiments in the 17th century – by examining dissonant relations between the 20th-century Avant-Gardes and the experimental culture of the Early Modern Period, we now want to explore – still against the background of the Avant-Gardes new concept of the experimental – the performativity of knowledge as a dynamic process, as an agent of cultural change in the Early Modern Period. This focus mainly results from our research on the crucial fields of knowledge Theatrum machinarum, Theatrum anatomicum and Theatrum alchemicum which shall now find their culminating point in studies in the fields of Theatrum oeconomicum, Theatrum politicum, and Theatrum philosophicum.
